The Greenhouse Art Collective

Transforming working greenhouses into informal spaces for reflection, discovery and conversation.

About the Project

As housing pressures increase and the island’s landscape continues to change, we feel it is important to recognise and celebrate the value, history and character of Guernsey’s greenhouses. Once central to island life and agriculture, many now stand abandoned, gradually disappearing from the landscape.

Launched in September 2026, The Collective's aim is to bring together a diverse group of local artists, each with their own creative practice, experiences and perspective. Through art, we want to encourage people to look more closely at the lives, labour, stories and communities that once filled these spaces. By reflecting on our past, we hope to open up conversations around heritage, sustainability, our relationship with the land, and the future of our local communities.

The Community Glasshouse Map

Each sticker represents a greenhouse from the past or present, with space to record what was grown there and who owned it. An important part of the project, travelling between exhibitions and growing as visitors add their own memories and knowledge. The map has already sparked conversations between generations and is helping to build a unique picture of Guernsey’s growing heritage.

Exhibitions and Events

Bailiwick Blue

Opening Night - Friday 11 September

This magical evening at Le Gele Vinery included a reading by local author Anna Stothard from her new book, The Girl in the Glasshouse, alongside refreshments and an opportunity to meet some of the artists and people involved in the project.

Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 September

The first weekend exhibition brought art and making together in a working greenhouse, with visitors able to explore the exhibition and take part in a programme of creative activities.

Visitors experimented with natural indigo, dyeing handkerchiefs and creating prints using leaves and other natural materials, with guidance from vinery owner George Fukuda and artist James Kail.

The Guernsey Garden Sketch Club gathered in the greenhouse for an en plein air drawing session.

Cornucopia

Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September

The second weekend took the exhibition to Cornucopia at Belmont Vinery, with another programme of art, growing and creative activity.

Stuart Ogier introduced visitors to the work of the Channel Islands Permaculture Institute, while the Guernsey Garden Sketch Club returned for another en plein air drawing session, sketching chickens, goats and everything of interest inside the greenhouse.

On Sunday, Alisha Flouquet modelled for a goat life-drawing session, bottle feeding Silvanus the goat inside our greenhouse gallery space. Visitors could also drop in to learn watercolour painting with Emma Griffin.

Edible Guernsey

Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 September

The final weekend of The Greenhouse Art Collective moved to Edible Guernsey at Sandpiper Vinery, bringing together art, food and conversation for one last celebration of Guernsey's growing heritage.

Visitors tried their hand at smartphone photography with Lucie Stribrska, while the Guernsey Garden Sketch Club returned for another en plein air drawing session. Athene Sholl explored foraging for inspiration, and James Kail led a natural pigment and indigo printing workshop.

There was organic food tasting, a plant sale, and a chance to meet the resident cats and goats, alongside a retrospective display of work from local artists across all three weekends. On Sunday, the Collective hosted a BBQ from 4pm, rounding off the series and providing an opportunity to reflect on the success of recent weeks.
