Three Greenhouses. Three Weekends. One Exhibition Celebrating Guernsey’s Heritage.

This September, three working Guernsey greenhouses have been transformed into temporary exhibition spaces, each hosting a weekend of contemporary art inspired by the island's rich agricultural and cultural heritage.

As housing pressures increase and the island’s landscape continues to change, we feel it is important to recognise and celebrate the value, history and character of Guernsey’s greenhouses. Once central to island life and agriculture, many now stand abandoned, gradually disappearing from the landscape.

Through art, we want to encourage people to look more closely at the lives, labour, stories and communities that once filled these spaces. By reflecting on our past, we hope to open up conversations around heritage, sustainability, our relationship with the land, and the future of our local communities.

The Exhibition

The Collective's aim has been to bring together a diverse group of local artists, each with their own creative practice, experiences and perspective. Across the first two weekends, their work has transformed working greenhouses into informal spaces for reflection, discovery and conversation.

The community glasshouse map has been an important part of the project, travelling between the venues and growing as visitors add their own memories and knowledge. Each sticker represents a greenhouse from the past or present, with space to record what was grown there and who owned it. The map has already sparked conversations between generations and is helping to build a unique picture of Guernsey’s growing heritage.
