Biography
Christine is a Guernsey artist who was brought up in the 50’s on a small cattle farm with a working forge, and a rich history of cider-making. Her family were also export growers and lived off the land. With the freedom to roam outdoors, exploring country lanes and meadows with siblings or watching and learning DIY and crafting skills passed down through the generations, this crafting environment afforded many and varied experiences that have undoubtedly influenced her life and artwork. From rope-making and woodwork to needlework and knitting, to walking miles as a family; challenges were a way of life that held no bounds.
In the formative years Eisteddfod trophies were awarded for Excellence in Art, drawing and needlework before achieving a Higher National Diploma in Fine Art, through the Guernsey College of Education in Christine also received accolades as Youth Club leader and in her role as Learning Support in Primary education she was awarded a Diploma in by the University of Brighton.
Artist Statement
As a multi-media artist my work has continued to diversify over time, aiming to push the boundaries of Fine Art, inspired by Picasso, Keifer and Long. Their work was forever in flux just as I have never been one to commit to a single genre or medium, as each personal project provides an opportunity for a unique work. I have an eye for detail so conventional disciplines are enjoyed alongside an experimental approach that embraces the element of chance and transformation. Often inspired by nature through ‘dérive’, (creative walks in direct response to the environment), this has become an integral element of my art language through observation, notation, or site-specific work. The creative turmoil of continual reinvention is what excites me as an artist.
Much of my work finds its way into galleries and community art exhibitions around the island besides the occasional commission, such as my translucent installation of 2003 that adorned the lift and concourse area at Beau se jour, for a few years.
