THE GUERNSEY ART COMMISSION ART OPPERTUNITY
The Guernsey Arts Commission is pleased to announce an Open Competition for all forms of visual and performance art, to be put forward for our exhibition – ‘Reflections on Occupation’, to be held at the greenhouse Gallery from Friday 16th March until Sunday 3rd June 2018. The competition has three categories: Visual arts; Performance arts and Poetry and Literature. The exhibition will coincide and engage with the Heritage Festival theme of Occupation and Liberation (running from 30th March - 10th May). This theme has been chosen by Visit Guernsey to coincide with the film, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, targeted for release 20th April 2018.
To further engage with the Heritage Festival, the Guernsey Arts Commission are planning on installing temporary exhibitions in a number of public places, which will give further opportunity for the artwork put forward for the Open Competition, to be put on display. We will also look to facilitate a number of live performances based around poetry, literature and the performing arts, during the Heritage Festival.
The Competition is open to all, and the closing date for submitted work is 9th February at 5pm.
We would encourage you to put pieces forward in different categories if you wish. Once completed please deliver your finished work/s, with your entry form, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, to the Guernsey Arts Commission, Candie Museum, Candie Road, St Peter Port, Guernsey GY1 1UG. Please see Brief for criteria for entry which are very wide and inclusive.
We look forward to receiving your entries! We are hoping this competition will attract entries from all ages, amateur or professional, regardless of your experience or education in the art field, and be exceptionally diverse and creative, ranging from musical and theatre pieces, to poetry and short stories, as well as visual art.
Please do not hesitate to contact us on 709747 if you have any queries. Forms are downloadable on our website www.arts.gg.

The Competition is open to all, and the closing date for submitted work is 9th February at 5pm. Winning entries will be displayed as part of Reflections on Occupation Exhibition at the greenhouse Gallery between 16th March and 3rd June 2018. Other entries will be considered for display in temporary public installations around the island. Guernsey was occupied by the German forces for most of the Second World War, from 30 June 1940 until their peaceful liberation on 9 May 1945. You can research this in the Guille-Alles Library, the Priaulx Library and in our local museums around the island, as well as talking to family and friends and observing and reflecting on our island today. Create a piece of art by reflecting on the Occupation of Guernsey and the impact it had on the island and its people. Interpret this in any way you feel appropriate, but you could think along these lines:
• A personal memory • A family memory • The impact of the Occupation on the island at the time, or through the decades into the 21st century • Economic, environmental, social and/or cultural impact • What if it turned out differently?
Collaborations bringing together a mix of disciplines would be welcomed eg music and dance, literature and theatre. Once completed please deliver your finished work/s, with your entry forms, between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, to the Guernsey Arts Commission, Candie Museum, Candie Road, St Peter Port, Guernsey GY1 1UG.
